We go into ceremony to talk with God

Text:

“When we run out of words, then and only then can God be God. When we have eaten our words until we are sick of them, when nothing we can tell ourselves makes a dent in our hunger, when we are prepared to surrender to the very Word that brought us into being in hopes of hearing it spoken again – then, at last, we are ready to worship God.”

~ Barbara Brown Taylor, When God is Silent

Scripture:  Psalm 46: 10-11

“’Be still, and know that I am God! I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth.’
The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah”

Reflection:

Our world is a place of ever-changing chaos, atoms swirling around and around every which way, inside and out. Nothing is static. It is no wonder we have such a difficult time trying to find some peace and quiet, some time for God, if you will. Our family and friends, our own bodies, our work life, the world; all of these things call us daily to be there, and we do everything we can to show up, to be present and open to the call of our everyday lives. Though not necessarily calm and quiet, this is indeed a means of spending time with God, and offers many opportunities for spiritual peace and contentment. However, I also find it equally, if not more important, for me to find time when it’s just me and God, no interruptions, no pressure, no urgent needs or desires. Just time with God, allowing the spirit to rest; a personal ceremony of breathing in the love of God, and exhaling the same. It is those quiet times alone with God that give direction and Divine meaning to my time spent wth others.

Prayer:

Most loving and steadfast Spirit, protector of all matter of things, may we feel your light shine on each of us today. Show us the abundance of comfort found in your most holy presence. Uphold us as we feel our cups fill to the point of overflowing, leaving nothing but the sincere desire to spread your loving presence wherever we find ourselves. Teach us to walk in ceremony with each other as we walk with you; in prayer, in love, in faith and with hope. Amen.
