Celebrate Freedom

“Looking Up During Uncertain Times”

A Daily Devotional

Text:  Exodus 15:20-21

Scripture Reading:

20 Then Aaron’s sister Miriam, who was a prophetess, took a tambourine in her hand. All the women followed her, playing tambourines and dancing. 21 Miriam told them:

“Sing to the Lord

because he is worthy of great honor.

He has thrown the horse and its rider

    into the sea.”

Reflection:

Did you know that Miriam is the first female prophet listed in the Bible? She is believed to be the same sister who looked out for Moses when he was a baby in a basket in the Nile River. Her work didn’t stop at the river and she is mentioned in the Bible as a person who spoke to God. Not everyone is mentioned by name in the Bible, especially women. It’s a big deal that Miriam is mentioned multiple times.

After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, Miriam was the leader of getting the freedom celebration going! How would you have celebrated if you were finally free from the mistreatment that the Israelites faced in Egypt? Would you have sung and danced with Miriam and Moses?

Prayer:

Hi God. Thank you for Miriam and her role in leading the Israelite people out of slavery. Amen.
