The Pedicure from Jesus – Jesus encourages us to do the dirty jobs.

Text: John 13:12-17 New International Version (NIV)

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Scripture Reading: John 13:12-17

Reflection:

This past week I read this passage with a whole new appreciation for Jesus and his willingness to take care of his disciples’ feet. The disciples’ feet were probably really rough looking with all of the daily walking they did from town to town. Jesus jumped in and did the dirty job! He also encouraged his disciples to follow his example in verse 15-17.

As I read this passage, I pictured Jesus sitting on one of those little wheeled stools at the foot of a pedicure station asking “Is the water warm enough?” (That might not be exactly what Jesus was going for but it really made me smile! I also pictured him telling parables while he colors hair! Can you picture that?) Jesus wanted his disciples to appreciate those who take care of others and to also take care of others themselves.

I’ve always read this passage thinking that the lesson was just common sense but the current situation has given me a new perspective. We have people among us who have taken Jesus’ instructions to the max! They have fully jumped in and embraced their now potentially dangerous jobs so that they can serve others. Thank you!

Prayer: Dear God, thank you for all of the wonderful people who continuously jump in and work harder than ever before. Please give them your strength and peace as they mentally and physically give of themselves. Amen.
